What is SRM?

SRM is one of the greatest achievements of the Western school of medical massage and manual medicine. Its high effectiveness in the treatment of various somatic and visceral abnormalities is based on a solid scientific foundation and decades of its clinical application.

The foundation of SRM was developed by the Russian scientist Prof. A. Sherbak, MD in 1910-1930. He looked on each disorder as a sign of abnormalities in the entire organism. Thus Prof. A. Sherbak suggested that any modality used for the patients treatment has to simultaneously use local and reflex mechanism of therapy. The complicated diagnostic procedure kept SRM from wide clinical use until the finding of two German scientists, Dr. O. Glezer, MD and Dr. A. Dalicho, MD in the 1950s. They analyzed an enormous amount of clinical material and successfully mapped the abnormalities in the soft tissues caused by different somatic and visceral disorders. Now these clinical maps are known as Glezer/Dalicho zones.

The basic concept of SRM is reflex zones. Reflex zones are formed in the soft tissues as a secondary response to the different chronic somatic and visceral disorders. As soon as reflex zones are formed they start to support further development of the original pathology which caused their formation. In the areas of reflex zones the practitioner can detect various abnormalities in the skin, connective tissue, skeletal muscles and periosteum. By eliminating these abnormalities using special techniques of SRM the practitioner is able to play an important and in many cases a critical role in the whole process of a patients treatment.

SRM is unique for its integrative approach to the medical massage therapy. SRM incorporates Connective Tissue Massage (CTM) and Periostal Massage (PM) into the protocol of treatment. Thus during this seminar you will learn basic conceptions of these methods of medical massage therapy as well. Finally, the audience will be given short review of Postisometric Muscular Relaxation (PIR) as an additional therapeutic tool for the elimination of reflex zones in the muscles.

SRM is not just one more massage technique which is good to know. It is a vision. Because of its integrative approach, SRM will completely change your attitude to the clinical possibilities of massage therapy. It will empower you with enough knowledge and skills to help your patients and improve the quality of their lives.
