(4). Massage influence on the vertebral column. For action on the cervical and upper thoracic parts of the vertebral column, see Fig. 59-64; 66-69. When using the paravertebral muscles relaxation technique, apply medium pressure (see Fig. 66-69).

c. Treatment using the PIR method.

Fig. 333-335 show the position of the patient and the direction of isometric contraction on the first level of PIR for each of the three portions of the deltoid muscle. For the anterior portion of the deltoid muscle, the patient has to simultaneously adduct arm while moving the shoulder forward from the position which is shown in Fig. 333. While the patient does this, the practitioner resists this movement.
